Taslima denies writing article, says its attempt to malign her
The Quran does prescribe purdah. That doesn’t mean women should obey it.

My mother used purdah. She wore a burqa with a net cover in front of the face. It reminded me of the meatsafes in my grandmother’s house. One had a net door made of cloth, the other of metal. But the objective was the same: keeping the meat safe. My mother was put under a burqa by her conservative family.

They told her that wearing a burqa would mean obeying Allah. And if you obey Allah, He would be happy with you and not let you burn in hellfire. My mother was afraid of Allah and also of her own father. He would
threaten her with grave consequences if she didn’t wear the burqa.

all dark inside? Don’t you feel breathless? Don’t you feel angry? Don’t you ever feel like throwing it off? My mother kept mum. She couldn’t do anything about it. But I did. When I was sixteen, I was presented a burqa by one of my relatives. I threw it away.

The custom of purdah is not new. It dates back to 300 BC. The women of aristocratic Assyrian families used purdah.
Ordinary women and prostitutes were not allowed purdah. In the middle ages, even Anglo-Saxon women used to cover their hair and chin and hide their faces behind a cloth or similar object. This purdah system was obviously not religious. The religious purdah is used by Catholic nuns and Mormons, though for the latter only during religious
ceremonies and rituals. For Muslim women, however, such religious purdah is not limited to specific rituals but
mandatory for their daily life outside the purview of religion.
A couple of months ago, at the height of the purdah controversy, Shabana Azmi asserted that the Quran doesn’t say anything about wearing the burqa. She’s mistaken. This is what the Quran says:
“Tell the faithful women that they must keep their gaze focused below/on the ground and cover their sexual organs.
They must not put their beauty and their jewellery on display. They must hide their breasts behind a purdah. They must not exhibit their beauty to anybody except their husbands, brothers, nephews, womenfolk, servants, eunuch employees and children. They must not move their legs briskly while walking because then much of their bodies can get exposed.” (Sura Al Noor 24:31)
“Oh nabi, please tell your wives and daughters and faithful women to wear a covering dress on their bodies. That would be good. Then nobody can recognise them and harrass them. Allah is merciful and kind.” (Sura Al Hijaab 33: 59)
Even the Hadis –a collection of the words of Prophet Mohammed, his opinion on various subjects and also about his work, written by those close to him– talks extensively of the purdah for women. Women must cover their whole body before going out, they should not go before unknown men, they should not go to the mosque to read the namaaz, they should not go for any funeral.

There are many views on why and how the Islamic purdah started. One view has it that Prophet Mohammed became very poor after spending all the wealth of his first wife. At that time, in Arabia, the poor had to go to the open desert and plains for relieving themselves and even their sexual needs. The Prophet’s wives too had to do the same. He had told his wives that “I give you permission to go out and carry out your natural work”. (Bukhari Hadis first volume book 4 No. 149).

And this is what his wives started doing accordingly. One day, Prophet Mohammed’s disciple Uman complained to him that these women were very uncomfortable because they were instantly recognisable while relieving themselves.Umar proposed a cover but Prophet Mohammed ignored it. Then the Prophet asked Allah for advice and he laid down the Ayat (33:59) (Bukhari Hadis Book 026 No. 5397).

This is the history of the purdah, according to the Hadis. But the question is: since Arab men too relieved themselves in the open, why didn’t Allah start the purdah for men? Clearly, Allah doesn’t treat men and women as equals, else there would be purdah for both! Men are higher than women. So women have to be made walking prisons and men can remain free birds. Another view is that the purdah was introduced to separate women from servants. This originates from stories in the Hadis. One story in the Bukhari Hadis goes thus: After winning the Khyber War, Prophet Mohammed took over all the properties of the enemy, including their women. One of these women was called Safia. One of the Prophet’s disciples sought to know her status. He replied: “If tomorrow you see that Safia is going around covered, under purdah, then she is going to be a wife. If you see her uncovered, that means I’ve decided to make her my servant.”

The third view comes from this story. Prophet Mohammed’s wife Ayesha was very beautiful. His friends were often found staring at her with fascination. This clearly upset the Prophet. So the Quran has an Ayat that says, “Oh friends of the prophet or holy men, never go to your friend’s house without an invitation. And if you do go, don’t go and ask anything of their wives”. It is to resist the greedy eyes of friends, disciples or male guests that the purdah system came into being. First it was applicable to only the wives of the holy men, and later it was extended to all Muslim women. Purdah means covering the entire body except for the eyes, wrist and feet. Nowadays, some women practise the purdah by only covering their hair. That is not what is written in the Hadis Quran. Frankly, covering just the hair is not Islamic purdah in the strict sense. In the early Islamic period, Prophet Mohammed started the practice of covering the feet of women. Within 100 years of
his death, purdah spread across the entire Middle East. Women were covered by an extra layer of clothing. They were forbidden to go out of the house, or in front of unknown men. Their lives were hemmed into a tight regime: stay at home, cook, clean the house, bear children and bring them up. In this way, one section of the people was separated by purdah, quarantined and covered.

Why are women covered? Because they are sex objects. Because when men see them, they are roused. Why should women have to be penalised for men’s sexual problems? Even women have sexual urges. But men are not covered for that. In no religion formulated by men are women considered to have a separate existence, or as human beings having desires and opinions separate from men’s. The purdah rules humiliate not only women but men too. If women walk about without purdah, it’s as if men will look at them with lustful eyes, or pounce on them, or rape them. Do they lose all their senses when they see any woman without burqa?

My question to Shabana and her supporters, who argue that the Quran says nothing about purdah is: If the Quran advises women to use purdah, should they do so? My answer is, No. Irrespective of which book says it, which person advises, whoever commands, women should not have purdah. No veil, no chador, no hijab, no burqa, no headscarf. Women should not use any of these things because all these are instruments of disrespect. These are symbols of women’s oppression. Through them, women are told that they are but the property of men, objects for their use. These coverings are used to keep women passive and submissive. Women are told to wear them so that they cannot exist with their self-respect, honour, confidence,
separate identity, own opinion and ideals intact.So that they cannot stand on their own two feet and live with their head held high and their spine strong and erect.
Some 1,500 years ago, it was decided for an individual’s personal reasons that women should have purdah and since then millions of Muslim women all over the world have had to suffer it. So many old customs have died a natural death, but not purdah. Instead, of late, there has been a mad craze to revive it. Covering a woman’s head means covering her brain and ensuring that it doesn’t work. If women’s brains worked properly, they’d have long ago thrown off these veils and burqas imposed on them by a religious and patriarchal regime.

What should women do? They should protest against this discrimination. They should proclaim a war against the wrongs and ill-treatment meted out to them for hundreds of years. They should snatch from the men their freedom and their rights. They should throw away this apparel of discrimination and burn their burqas.

Thousands of people are dead in Port-au-Prince, Haiti after a disastrous earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck on Tuesday January 12, razing major infrastructure in the capital including many neighborhoods, the Parliamentary building, Presidential Palace, the main cathedral, the main prison, the UN building among others. With many hospitals in ruins (Doctors without Borders lost three hospitals) in this poor Caribbean country, the earthquake has affected 3 million people - a third of the country. Disaster relief has just began in this poorest country in the western hemisphere with 80% of the people below the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty. Two thirds of the labor force has no formal jobs.

Immediate relief is needed. Many hundreds are trapped and rescuers are working very hard. Medical supplies are in shortage.

70% of the world's population live without religious freedom

70% of the world's 6.8 billion people live in countries with high restrictions on religion, the brunt of which often falls on religious minorities, according to a new study of prestigious Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life.

This study, "Global Restrictions on Religion", found that 64 nations have high or very high restrictions on religion. Some restrictions result from government actions, policies and laws.
Others result from hostile acts by private individuals, organizations and social groups.

In 178 countries, religious groups must register with the government for various purposes, and in 117, the registration requirements resulted in major problems for, or outright discrimination against, certain faiths.
Public tensions between religious groups were reported in the vast majority (87%) of countries and in 126 countries, these hostilities involved physical violence.
In 49 countries, private individuals or groups used force or the threat of force to compel adherence to religious norms, the study adds.

Its 26/11 and the saddest day in Indian History. I was watching the T^V and there we are unable to digest what happened to us and unable to figure out what we really need. We Indians no we as human beings ?! May be but then why is all this bloodshed ? We make rules to live happily and comfortably .. But why do we often get martyred for the rules that we have made ? Isnt it foolish was all I was thinking all along.
May be I donot understand whats happening in a philosophical sense but yes I do understand the pain the grief and the sufferings of my fellow being. Be it in Afghanistan / India / pakistan/ somalia / darfur ..
Then why is that people do not understand the value of life. Sometime glorifying the death and at others glorifying the suffering ?

Yeah I was puzzled and shocked. Exactly..

I was updating a couple of blogs on Flood relief including http://sevabharathi.blogspot.com and then it popped up on my G Talk from IBNLIVE Obama selected for Nobel. My instant reaction was shit? Sorry to use that but that was what I felt like. Come on man he hasnt even taken up the admion in full force adn what the bloody hype. the man would i think die of pressure. Atleast I would die listening to the number of promises that he makes. After 9 months in office adn hardly any productive outcome if one was to be awarded a Nobel peace prize then we have a million ppl in India alone who can do that and around the world a couple of millions more.

Aptly the norwegian PM puts it "This is a surprising, an exciting prize. It remains to be seen if he will succeed with reconciliation, peace and nuclear disarmament."

Here i was tweeting and friend finding on social networks on how good I was feeling about the rains. I just could not imagine how horrific the situation was outside. I was lost in my world of financial turmoils and the feeling of being neglected by my employer blah .. blah .. and blaah.

Was telling my friends how gud I was feeling about being free and unemployed. But was online doing voluntary work all by myself for a host of agencies and collecting funds and some goodwill for my self ;)

It was after a couple of days of mechanical volunteering that People started concerntrating around me for the efforts I have put all these years to build up http://sevabharathi.blogspot.com a wholesome info mine. So people started calling me up and asking me for latest updates and if they have seen them they would go ahead and ask where do we send the money. In doing all that Somehow subconcious levels started melting and I started looking at the figures the pictures the video and the Statistics. It was then that it dawned on me how bad if not worse the situation has gone.

People loosing everything from luxuries to on the roads in a matter of minutes if not seconds. The docomo advt was tru (I heard a friend once say Advts are true philosophical stuff. How true ?) Saw people loosing their dear ones. Saw them being robbed. Can you Imagine how much a safe boat drive costs ? Rs. 10,000/- unbelieveble!

A popular motivational speaker was entertaining his Audience. He Said: "The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who wasn't my wife!"

The audience was in silence and shock. The speaker added: "And that woman was my mother!"

Laughter and Applause!!!

A week later, a top manager trained by the Motivational speaker tried to crack this very effective joke At home. He was a bit foggy after a drink. He said loudly to His wife who was preparing dinner, "The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who was not my Wife!"

The wife went; "ahhhh!" with shock and rage.

Standing there for 20 seconds trying to recall the second Half of the joke, the manager finally blurted out "...and I can't remember who she was!"

By the time the manager regained his consciousness, he was on a hospital bed nursing burns from boiling water.

The Good Lord was creating teachers. It was His sixth day of 'overtime' and He knew that this was a tremendous responsibility for teachers would touch the lives of so many impressionable young children. An angel appeared to Him and said, "You are taking a long time to figure this one out."

"Yes," said the Lord, " but have you read the specs on this order?"

TEACHER:

…must stand above all students, yet be on their level
... must be able to do 180 things not connected with the subject being taught
... must run on coffee and leftovers,
... must communicate vital knowledge to all students daily and be right most of the time
... must have more time for others than for herself/himself
... must have a smile that can endure through pay cuts, problematic children, and worried parents
... must go on teaching when parents question every move and others are not supportive
... must have 6 pair of hands.

"Six pair of hands, " said the angel, "that's impossible"
"Well, " said the Lord, " it is not the hands that are the problem. It is the three pairs of eyes that are presenting the most difficulty!"

The angel looked incredulous, " Three pairs of eyes...on a standard model?"

The Lord nodded His head, " One pair can see a student for what he is and not what others have labeled him as. Another pair of eyes is in the back of the teacher's head to see what should not be seen, but what must be known. The eyes in the front are only to look at the child as he/she 'acts out' in order to reflect, " I understand and I still believe in you", without so much as saying a word to the child."

"Lord, " said the angel, " this is a very large project and I think you should work on it tomorrow".

"I can't," said the Lord, " for I have come very close to creating something much like Myself. I have one that comes to work when he/she is sick.....teaches a class of children that do not want to learn....has a special place in his/her heart for children who are not his/her own.....understands the struggles of those who have difficulty.. ..never takes the students for granted..."

The angel looked closely at the model the Lord was creating.
"It is too soft-hearted, " said the angel.

"Yes," said the Lord, " but also tough, You can not imagine what this teacher can endure or do, if necessary".

"Can this teacher think?" asked the angel.

"Not only think," said the Lord,. "but reason and compromise."

The angel came closer to have a better look at the model and ran his finger over the teacher's cheek.

"Well, Lord, " said the angel, your job looks fine but there is a leak. I told you that you were putting too much into this model. You can not imagine the stress that will be placed upon the teacher."

The Lord moved in closer and lifted the drop of moisture from the teacher's cheek. It shone and glistened in the light.

"It is not a leak," He said, "It is a tear."

"A tear? What is that?" asked the angel, "What is a tear for?"

The Lord replied with great thought, " It is for the joy and pride of seeing a child accomplish even the smallest task. It is for the loneliness of children who have a hard time to fit in and it is for compassion for the feelings of their parents. It comes from the pain of not being able to reach some children and the disappointment those children feel in themselves. It comes often when a teacher has been with a class for a year and must say good-bye to those students and get ready to welcome a new class."

They were a little more surprised than they would normally be and asked me if I knew anything about Idea Super singers on MAATV the telugu channel. I said yeah heard about it but am not really sure If I can remember anything from the show worth it.

After a few minutes the discussion came back to Madhu Priya and thats when I googled and watched her song on the GIRL CHILD and what cam shaking to me was that this kid 12 year old prodigy wrote the lyrics and tune for the song herself. NAd she says she would do anything and everything in her disposition to make girls study and would not let their education stop at poverty or something similar.

Then The other shocker she sang in a programme to fund a kidney failure patient and raised 4 lakh but when I saw her home it was a shanty one room house. And I was thrilled to know she has been the driving force for KCR's Telangana music and Gaddars programmes as well as even Kishan Reddy (BJP) and none of the politicians ever gave her anything despite gaining loads of publicity from the girls songs.

What was more hurtinmg was due to the reality show politics she was eliminated by a movie music director (god knows what a music dir of telugu movies knows of folk songs) and due to the immense pressure from audience the Channel had to reinduct her into the contest and now the very same Music director is sponsoring her to USA.

I was a little bit or a lot to be fair confused of the blogging thing and here i go asking super idiotic questions adn torturing RAM my fav lecturer n friendly guide on the topic that i misunderstood most. Also misguided most of my friends with perceptions that sounded foolish after this conversation. Well may be It helps to talk to such friends.
But to be fair I wanted to influence friends that spoke eloquently and uninterrupted to put that in black and white, so told them blog is informal and you can write it like SMS. No serious work just your usual lingo. That infact worked and a lot of them are writing now(though not reggular).

A forward from a friend, says its the best story

There was a contest in TCS to write a fictional story for 500 words max which would start with the line " On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Chennai station "
This is what a guy wrote for the contest....... and surprisingly, it was adjudged the best short story : ))
On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Chennai station. At once I was held back to see someone in that position during mid night with no one around. With curiosity taking the front seat, I went near the body and tried to investigate it. There was blood all over the body which was lying face down. It seemed that a ruthless blow by the last train could have caused the end of this body which seemed to be that of a guy of around my age. Amidst the gory blood flow, I could see a folded white envelope which was fluttering in the midnight wind. Carefully I took the blood stained envelope and was surprised to see the phrase "appraisal letter" on it. With curiosity rising every moment, I wasted no time in opening the envelope to see if I can find some details about the dead guy. The tag around the body's neck and the jazzy appraisal cover gave me the hint that he might be a software engineer. I opened the envelope to find a shining paper on which the appraisal details where typed in flying colors. Thunders broke into my ears and lightening struck my heart when I saw the appraisal amount of the dead guy!!!!! My God, it was not even, as much as the cost of the letter on which the appraisal details were printed.... My heart poured out for the guy and huge calls were heard inside my mind saying "no wonder, this guy died such a miserable death"... As a fellow worker in the same industry, I thought I should mourn for him for the sake of respect and stood there with a heavy heart thinking of the shock that he would have experienced when his manager had placed the appraisal letter in his hand. I am sure his heart would have stopped and eyes would have gone blank for few seconds looking at the near to nothing increment in his salary.
While I mourned for him, for a second my hands froze to see the employee's name in the appraisal letter... hey, what a strange co-incidence, this guy's name is same as mine, including the initials. This was interesting. With some mental strength, I turned the body upside down and found myself fainted for a second. The guy not only had my name, but also looked exactly like me. Same looks, same built, same name.... it was me who was dead there!!!!!!!! While I was lost in that shock, I felt someone patting on my shoulders. My heart stopped completely, I could not breathe and sprung in fear to see who was behind......... splash!!! Went the glass of water on my laptop screen as I came out of my wild dream to see my manager standing behind my chair patting on my shoulder saying, "wake up man? Come to meeting room number two. I have your appraisal letter ready".

Looks like Rakhi is one festival that is Style, Tradition and Love combined together. As one of those Western Journalist puts it its New Year, Thanksgiving and Christmas day all combined in one. Isn't it true ? And look at this years' craze the ZOoozoo rakhis.

If Spiderman, Superman and Ganesha rakhis ruled the markets last season, this year, Zoozoos the ingenious promotional characters used by a telecom network which captured the imagination of the entire nation have taken over the rakhi stalls too.

The shopkeepers are counting quick bucks as these innovative rakhis are finding a great demand among the younger lot.

And who says theres recession when daimond studded Rakhis are selling hot. Ofcourse anything to please a brother.

This is Surat diamond units’ ingenious idea that they launched diamond rachis for sisters who want to give their brothers some really good gift. After the festivals the brothers can convert this rachis into bracelets or pwndants.
The rakhis are also available where the diamonds are replaced by precious stones as per customer specifications like ruby, amber, emarald and others.

In Ahmedabad, a similar initiative has been made by local jewellers but instead of diamond they have used ‘kundan’ works (a technique of combining gold with precious and semi-precious stones).

These diamond rakhis could cost anything between Rs 2,000 to Rs 50,000 based on design and quality of the diamond and precious stone.

Back to tradition and folk stories and history put together I found this somewhere.

The tales and stories related to the Rakhi festival tell us about the great devotion and the affectionate bond between brothers and sisters:-
1. Yama and Yamuna: According to a mythological tale, Yama, the lord of death, was blessed with eternity as his sister Yamuna tied up a Rakhi thread on his wrist. Since that time the festival of Raksha Bandhan is associated with tying of Rakhi thread.
2. The Tale of Lord Bali and Goddess Lakshmi: According to the tale King Bali one day approached to the Lord Vishnu to get his kingdom safeguarded from its enemies. Lord Vishnu decided to help his great devotee and was set to leave his heavenly home. Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu, did not want her lord to leave the home and reached to the Balis mansion in disguise of Brahmin woman to seek shelter. On the auspicious day of Shravan Purnima Lakshmiji while tying a revered thread on Balis wrist told her purpose for being there. Touched by the tender feelings of Lakshmiji for her family, King Bali requested Lord Vishnu to not leave his abode. Therefore, the Rakhi festival is also called Baleva that means the devotion of King Bali to Lord Vishnu.
3. Indra and Sachi: Indra, the king of devtas, had lost his kingdom to the asura Vritra. Indras wife Sachi than tied a thread around her husbands wrist to ensure his victory in the upcoming war between him and Vrita. This was done at the behest of guru Brihaspati.
4. Draupadi and Krishna: Lord Krishna was left with a bleeding finger, after Shishupals death. To stop the flow of blood, Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, had torn a strip of silk off her sari and tied it around Krishnas wrist. Touched by her concern, Krishna declared Himself to protect her and promised to repay the debt manifold, and spent the next 25 years of his life doing just that.
There is also evidence from history that foretells how Rakhi festival originated in the course of time. These historical facts speak grandiose stories of sacred bond between the great heroes and heroines of the ages. They are:-
1. King Porus and Alexandars wife: Another rakhi tale comes from the battle between Alexander the Greek king, and Porus, the Hindu king. Wife of Alexander sent a sacred thread to Porus, asking him not to harm her husband in battle. In accordance with Hindu traditions, Porus gave full respect to rakhi. In the battlefield, when Porus was about to deliver a final blow on Alexander, he saw the rakhi on his hand and restrained himself from attacking Alexander personally.
2. Humayun and Queen Karmavati: Queen Karmavati of Chittor had sent a Rakhi to Humayun to protect her from Bahadur Shah. Humayun, then engaged in an expedition against Bengal, turned back to carry out his sacred brotherly duty and tried to protect her but was too late. Chittor had already fallen and the Rani had immolated herself in the Rajput custom of Jauhar.
3. Rabindranath Tagore's call to nation: During the partition of Bengal in 1905, Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet used the occasion of the Raksha Bandhan as a community festival and gave a call to tie a rakhi amongst all Hindus and Muslims so as to maintain peace and harmony between them and spread the nationalist spirit among people from different ethnic backgrounds.
This is how Raksha Bandhan came into existence in the ages of old Hindu mythology and has moved into the modern ages as a symbol of universal brotherhood and goodwill.

This is a mail that I got from one of my Friends Satya. Well Its interesting and most of them We have tried atlest once but are useful yet. So here we go...

Hi, I thought of sharing with you some of the important tech-tips usnign free software tools (of course many of you are experts and may also be aware of these tools) just in case I can save some of your efforts of doing any further research or perhaps you never thought of them. I use all these tools all the time happily.

(1) WEB BROWSERS: Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome is the best web browser when compared to Mozilla Firefox which is better than Microsoft IE Internet Explorer, because it is pro-active with better capabities to catch virus when you visit web sites, even if you don;t have proper viorus tools installed in PCs, talking of which Caspersky seems to be a better solution than Anti-Virus tool than the McAfee, Norton, eTrust etc, simply because some virus programs could not kill it where as they could kill some these popular anti-virus tools. Use Lavasoft's free www.adaware.com for periodic ads cleanup.

Well Chrome is ok but somehow that feel and glamour is missing. I personally love Mozilla Firefox. Infact Firefox should pay me coz wherever I sit I make it a point to download and have it on the sys. Adware is ok but somehow itself seems more of a bugging thing.

(2) DOCUMENT CONVERTER: You have 2 solutions to convert any documents like pdf/doc/xls/txt etc into pdf/jpg/bmp etc as follows (to design flyers etc). You can convert any document such as .doc .pdf .xls etc into an image file like .jpg or .bmp by simply selecting a print command to print it on to this BullZIP printer and select the format options.

Here I would rather go for foxit in PDF and PDF995 but thats only for docs / Images / files to Pdf.

(A) Download and install BullZIP PDF pritner driver from the following and print any document to "bullzip pdf printer" http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php#download You can choose the JPG image quality by increasing the resolution to the best you can depending on the file size you can fit.

Well can try this one next time no harm.

(B) Upload your document in to http://convert.neevia.com/ as input and choose any output format and click on convert. Since there is max limit of 1MB, you might want to consider the options of downloading this s/w and install their conversion tool. Unless you pay some small price, it will show a water mark on converted documents, and so the above option is more preferable.

Ok this seems practically convinient, but somehow foxit mmm ... am i rigid n unable to change U cant say that but may be.

(3) PHOTO EDITING: And also, you can edit for free, any of your photos and make albums with free software tools like -- infranview, picaso, gimp (unix/linux/mac). Of all, I like the "infranview" as the best due to its flexibility. You can also increse the resolution with smart extrapolation techniques of infranview unlike many tools, which is the best attraction. It can be downloaded from http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm No need to pay for commercial s/w.

Well Irfanview is a gud thing. I did try it but Google's picasa seems much more comfortable. Again I am thinking of asking a payment from google coz, I download it on any n every comp possible.

(4) DESKTOP SHARING: The best desktop sharing tool is now "teamviewer" - forget about those various versions of VNC tools like UltraVNC, TightVNC, the RealVNC (which is now commercialized but used to be free) or uncle Bill Gate's remote desktop connections tools, showmypc, pcanywhere, gotopc etc.

Wow this is new. I never tried this one. I will. Thank you Satya.

Download it from http://www.teamviewer.com and install it on both remote PCs. No VNC-like port forwarding is needed anymore. If you choose free personal or community use option, it just flashes message as a reminder (a little annopynace byt bearable). I encourage all affordable ones to donate for these s/w tools.

(5) FREE WEBSERVER AT YOUR HOME: You can create your own web server at home and avoid paying the expenive maintenance costs for web hosting services. All thet you need is to register a domain name. The cheapest way to buy a domain name is http://www.domaindarts.com/ and then sign up with a free acoount at http://www.zoneedit.com and you can manage upto 5 domains for free by creating an NS record for each domain name. It requires an IP address but your home PC will have a dynamic IP using your network provider like DSL or CableModem. Visit the http://www.dyndns.com/ and set up an automated dynamic DNS IP update service using your own DSL Router/Cable Modem (now-a-days almost every router supports like WRT54G) and then you can host your own domain name and your own web site at your own PC. You can also use Java with tomcat/apached, or ASP/C# with .NET/IIS for web site development tools. I prefer the XAMP ( http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html ) which was earlier called LAMPP approach i.e. check all the 1st characters of Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl combination of tool kit. All thatLAMPP/XAMPP comes as one single software bundle so that you don't need to worry about integration. For web site development, you can use can install Joomla ( http://www.joomla.org ), or use the commercial software tools web development toolkit DreamWeaver from MacroMedia/Adobe or use FrontPage like tools for building HTML pages. You can add web portals such as www.eGroupWare.org . You can extend it further using WSDL, Soap, XML development tool kits for distributed processing for interoperability between MiocroSoft and Sun technologies. Use http://www.FileZilla.org for uploading/downoad of files form local PC to the web server to synchonize with smart FTP.

(6) LINUX SDK tools: Use www.cygwin.com which is the best and free open source SDK tools using the entire power of Linux/Unix on Windows platforms. It also comes with all compilers using GNU tools and all development scripting tools like perp, php, tcl/tk, expect, awk, sed, bash, cvs etc. Use MySQL in stead of the database tools such as Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, Ingres, Sybase, Access as far as possible. Php/MySQL admin tools are the for web admin.

Bhoom, Bhoom never understud a word of that. But will figure it out. Some of d friends r in to software, so may be they can help with this bouncers.

(7) SCCS: Use the CVS tools from http://www.cvshome.org/ for source code control (SCCS) on network and the http://www.bugzilla.org for bug tracking and se www.cppunit.org and www.junit.org for regression testing and ofcourse the corresponding equivalnt commercail tools in the respective order such as the fancy ClearCase and ClearQuest tools and the Mercury's WinRunner, LoadRunner. Cygwin's free "expect" test tool is best for command line based testing.

(8) VEDIO CONF: check several free opensource tools for vedio conferenceing, which do much better than commercial Netmeeting, webex, gotomeeting etc.

(9) CHAT/MESSENGER: Use PIDGIN from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pidgin/ fas chat tool which acts like a superset of all popular existing chat or messenger tools such yahoo, gchat, aim etc. You can get rid og all these messenger tools, with just one free installation of pidgin tool. There are several online books marks managers, which can synchronize all your favorite book maerked links at a remote web server and keep it acceissble using plug-ins. Use free source code jabberd web server in Java to design your chat server and Coccinella web client using Python/Tcl/Tk tools for creating your own chat client.

mmmm But I have my Yahho n G talk. Why would I go to some obscure thing. Ok Let me try. anyways.

(10) GOOGLE DOCS: Use Google's shared documents using your gmail accounts for any events planning and coordination work, rather than emailing XLS, DOC, JPG attahments. These Google Dcouments proivide a lot of flexibility for simultaneous editing of MicroSoft Documents on network with perfect security

(11) FREE CONFERENCE: Use http://www.FreeConference.com tools to set up free conference calls using a free bridge call setup available 24x7 with complete control of running a phone conf call using a dedicated bridge number and reports summary etc. Also provides call recording facility using MP3 files.

(12) VOIP: SKYPE is the best when compared for making local/international calls and also for conference calls with desk top connections. It has a free VOIP service to make any calls using internet. By the by, I use www.rebtel.com. It has the best technology to generate automated phone numbers in your own area code nearby and lets you dial into your local phone numbers to make the cheapest international calls outside of USA like 2.9 cents per minute to India.

Skype I hav tried n dont know abt this one. Lemme c .. But all these thiings do they work in India 2?

Hey Before I forget here is a Huge hug to all my friends and especially for somebody special, the Birthday boy JAYSEELAN. (the one with a beard)

The past week has been a hectic one adn researching on Gun History is no small thing (Happy) and meeting the elderly profesors and sharing their epertise is an experience if a lifetime. Then there is the US trip of Francois and had to spruce up the websites that i left for somebody to take over and no it can never be that way. Veeru is Veeru and unique only he can do certain things at certain point of time crucial enough. Online advertising without spending a penny is an Art i feel I have considerable expertise in.

And here I go picking up pieces from francois' trips and putting together all of them on (www.francoisgautier1.blogspot.com) FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, ORKUT, TWITTER and loads of Free Press Release service sites online. Well Its quarter way along the work and still loads to do. Hope Francois mobilises more support for the History Museum being Built in Pune. Hopefully! But Indians and abroad you never know. NRIs :) if they feel for it they will pour out of their pockets adn untouched tere you go my biggest fear. Hopefully Francois' dream should comethrough and true. He has been campaigning fo the Country for long. And yt all he gets is brickbats.

Then I have my own things on hand. Promised a friend to help with an Orphan kid for supporting through her education and an old age home decent enough in rural Andhra for a friend. Its pretty tough getting things done and on time. You know veeru can do it. Come on daa you can.

Here is one more and last but not the least thing that keeps comming on my radar to Support the Voluntary agencies like Vandemataram Foundation for the good work they are doing. Am in designing their website (oops not the computer wallah desgn) and am their exper for online activities. heee as if i know a lot. But wotever with my limited knowledge is ok as long as it benefits those who can make a difference.

Mail fwds and SOSes but which are the Fake ones

On an average I get about 250 mails from friends and acquaintances and another 70 n odd promotional. How much ever I resist or intimate or put them in spam n flag them this is one thing that never dies. Hope some day something will be found to detect them ofcourse free of cost (I don hav so much money).

Earlier it was a season for the mails like if u fwd microsoft / yahoo or xyz will pay u so much and then it went philanthrophy if you fwd som chronic patient in needwould be paid for his medical aid. Then came the devotional touch. Even earlier there was this printed pamphlet and if u ever ever get one in your hand then thats it. It says u hav 2 publish 100 or so and distribute them otherwise something bad will happen. Following that was these emails the next awatar version next. Scary and cursing.

So Iam in a fix with such mails as the one below. Who knows which is genuine. So I thought I would simply paste it here rather than trouble some of my friends with hystierical fwds. May be its time...

Somehow I like the way the BING search works adn the reason may be a softcorner towards the Microsoft, but wheneveryone has written it off its jumped back to TOP20 The alexa lists it so and the Hitwise also lists it so.

Thats very nice espl when you are written off bouncing back is super.

The one at the left bottom is Sambasivarao (Chandasasan rao ;( hee or so we use to call him). This one is an article from telugu newspaper on growing muschs the bigger and the mighty or so.

Bigg ones, large ones, fat ones and thin oneswotever the size the muschs are a royal look for the men and it has been a tradition in telugus (andhra pradesh) to grow them as pride. Infact there was this CM Mr NTR who even gave extra allowance for those that grew royal and big mustaches. Wel i love them too.

Probably sometime after I have the site designed. My Bro Shravan will be doing the design part. There was this idea of hosting my own site then I opted stragely for the Yahoo 360 to blog with help from a friend Deepa priyadarshini. Well did well with approx 300,000 visitors in 4 years. Yahoo as usual gave me a shock of my life that it was closing, I had become an online refugee and shifted to the current blog but unsatisfied.

Yahoo first shutdown its briefcase, then Photos, then Y360, and now its closing down its Geocities the Free websites with subdomain. God may be I should never depend on yahoo, and thats probably one reason yahoo is losing out on competition and customer base.

You know to have your own space is lovely.

Also trying to make my own projects probably sometime later.

Its been quite a tiring day after the running around and last nights heavy rain the weather was pleasant but the travel takes the air out of you. All the Radio shows today were on the rain and also the shortage / polluted drinking water supply in delhi.

While going thru the newspapers I was wondering of the stupidity that the Indian Prime Minister who incidentally is one of my favourite personalities (Infact I wrote to him once and the gentleman he was replied promptly when he was the opp leader) has said about the Baloch and the Terror delinking statement at NAM summit. He either is a stupidest politician or wants all of us to be one.

I was travelling from Mayurvihar on the outskirts of Delhi to the Connaught place in Delhi and it was a rough ride. God what a difference the Metro makes for the common commuter is evident and reaching Yamuna bank metro station is an excercise if not circus and a drive from there on is cakewalk.

And today morning I woke up and tuned in to the radio it was great news to learn that the Noida Yamuna bank Metro is on test drive which means it would soon be operational. Great relief man.

And going thru the articles in the paper in hand I found this wonderful piece by guess whom.. ? Thomas freedman! yeah i do not know first when i read him but since then it has been a great reading. Espl his green techand economy based ones.

Well here is Thomas friedman's column on terrorism and the GUD WORK the american Mr Greg Mortenson is doing and all that stuff. I was moved by the last paragraph, I nad we all know its not true but the way americans depict their deeds and justify them is god save us. To commemorate 10 years of the Kargil war, Abhishek Bachchan travelled to Drass and Kargil (where most of the war was fought), to Abhishek Bachchan visit the jawans.

Bachchan Junior was joined by many soldiers for an evening full of emotional turns and lilting poetry. Its rained cats and dogs so to say but what caught my attention today is the Radio on my mobile. The FM which I usually do not use, was forced to switch on coz I was unable to get out of my room. Then on this channel called Radio Mirchi the Radio zingle was intersting asking the listeners to lend their voice to Blind children and read out stories to them either recorded or live.

The programme goes like call up pallavi or mail her at pallavi983@gmail.com (sorry for the typo) and you can participate in Lend your voice.

Its a wonderful initiative where you can do your bit in helping the needy and yet you benefit out of it.

The Other day I was Listening to radio City and the Topic for discussion was Continental AirlinesFrisking APJ Abdul Kalam
I was curious but the RJ was a cracky girl and she was driving the discussion into something very naughty and not very serious as the issue was. Well opinions matter and are respectable, but how dare you comment on the Sentiments of people. Kalam is not an Individual he is an Icon and frisking him is insulting India. Its not about VIPs and other things. When The same American Airlines frisked George fernandes nobody cared.

Kalam demands a huge following and it is protocol that ex presidents need not go through the frisking and security checks. Will the same Airlines do the same for an Ex US president never. The point is we are taken for granted. Look at the Social networking sites and blogs the anguish of Indians visible. These double standards and hypocrisy of the west is what we are protesting. The RJs should not be some Dumb asses that just make fun of and play some clumsy music. They have social responsibility.

Although its a Womens channel the Meow another FM channel has dealt with it in a very decent way. Being an RJ is like accomodating others views and not necessarily dumping yours on others.

I just finished another book on HINDU MASJIDS by one MR Prfull Goradia. Doesnt have anything to do with controversies but mere facts. There is a complete manuscript of the book online at the Janasangh website. Yeah but dont get judgemental about this for gods sake or heavens sake or wotever. Just read the book here

Hindu masjids personify the deep chasm, or the sharp conflict between the Hindu ethos and Muslim zealotry. The conflict must be resolved. Why are we anxious? For the simple reason that without resolution, India cannot acquire the spirit of collective honour. And without national pride, the country cannot leap forward.Individual citizens may flourish or shine, as they do even now, whether at home' or overseas. But the collective performance of the country disappoints.
Many a Samaritan has tried to bridge the Hindu/Muslim chasm. Perhaps no one tried more than Mahatma Gandhi who went to extraordinary lengths by leading the khilafat movement in 1919 whose logical conclusion was anti-national.Yet his mission failed and eventually India was partitioned. The reason, possibly was that well meaning bridge builders did not comprehend the mismatch between the Hindu psyche and Muslim mind. It is well known that the conceptual purposeof an average Hindu is self actualization. Or fulfill himself by the best of karma which should eventually lead to moksha, mukti or nirvana. The Hindu universe consists of all living beings including animals, birds, reptiles et al. Since souls transmigrate, ideally violence should not exist.

Well written and has an interesting illustrations with photographic evidence the author has personally visited and talked to people around. Although it seems that it is full of info and dumped but each word and reference is by itself a strong and historical evidence collected mostly from the western sources and islamic sources. (The author repeats every now and then that since the quote / archive mentioned is not Hindu it doesnt have to be judged and is right)

Another very interesting fact is the authors theory of British are good and not necessarily bad, they might have used the schisms and divisions between us for ruling us but otherwise they are gentlemen. I kind of tended to think and debate the issue.

Its raining atlast and waiting solar eclipse

I have never waited for the rains as I have been doing of late. Its stinking, humid and its lot of uneasy uncomfortable life in Delhi. Never in the past 5 years have i felt like this. And I stopped sleeping due to the Humidity at nights and asdded to them is the mosquitoes. they have together made life hell.

Now Today its rained hopefully things will improve.

Tommorrow is the total solar eclipse and Iam planning to escape from Delhi to Bihar, but dont think plans will workout as much. Have a lot of work to do and loads of commitments. So deadlines boss they matter as much as life.

Bad luck veeru and you miss this eclipse and its not untill March 20 in 2034 that we have another eclipse of this scale. And theres one scheduled for January 15 in 2010, but only for the south India.

Reading Kudip Nayar's Between the lines

Have been reading the book Between the lines by Kuldeep Nayar a well covered book and I have not come across any meaningful memoirs of another journalist / govt officer (b it the PRO MEA) detailed and yet to the point.

Borrowed the book long back from Srikanth's father he is a good collector of books and a book reader. Its an awesome book that i have read in ages. Although I hated his recent articles mainly filthy and hypocratic and with a hangover of wanting to write a more middle way and indecissive rather than being journalsitic or anywhere near.

In the book mainly highlighted are two of the greatest and toughest times the National language issue / official language and the Indo-china border dispute and how Nehru's shortsighted and dreamy idealistic philosophies bookish had taken over the Indian pride and practically left the ntion bankrupt and nude in the commity of nations.

I love the way he addressed and covered the issues in this book.

I keep getting a large no of forwards and some are real wiered and irritating while some are funny and makes me smile and some like this one is worth a million if not more. Thank you friends for all that expressions and forwards. But thank u subbu for forwarding this piece.

A lady in a faded grey dress and her husband, dressed in a home-spun suit walked in timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Harvard.

"We want to see the President "the man said softly.

"He'll be busy all day "the secretary snapped.

"We'll wait" the lady replied.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president..

"Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they'll leave" she said to him. The President, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple.

The lady told him "We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here.. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus."

The president wasn't touched.....He was shocked. "Madam "he said, gruffly, " we can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery."

"Oh, no," the lady explained quickly” We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard."

The president rolled his eyes.. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, and then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard."

For a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now. The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a university ? Why don't we just start our own?"

Her husband nodded. The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name: -StanfordUniversity, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

Most of the time we judge people by their outer appearance, which can be misleading. And in this impression, we tend to treat people badly by thinking they can do nothing for us. Thus we tend to lose our potential good friends, employees or customers.

In our Life, we seldom get people with whom we want to share & grow our thought process. But because of our inner EGO we miss them forever.

Tried putting the Reliance thing in HTC in hyderabad but naaaah doesnt work so now trying to do it in Delhi Gaffar market (notorious for unlocking any phone on earth). The guy says come back in the evening mmmm .. so wot do i do until then watched two movies back 2 back. Kambakht Ishq (a copy of the tamil / telugu film) n The Proposal so had a double headache back 2 back.

God save me and praying my phone is configured coz this guy is nt picking up my calls. The Phone guy has given me a rider that the reliance network doesnt support the HTC touch so need to have a new cnnection from TATA Indicom the other CDMA operator. Hopefully it works out ..

I lost my father when I was hardly 10 /11 (see i am such an ass whole that i dont remember even that) and it was miserable if thats a scandal or something behind all that. No not even the best of the ppl can understand what it is like coz only who has gone thru can actually figure out or atleast feel the pain.

I feel so sorry for the girl and pray she has happiness and bliss in life.

Super surprise from a childhood friend

Wow what a day man, the day befor yesterday (4th July) was with no food the day through out was exhausting attending the Vandemataram foundation meetings (I am their web advisor) helping them redesign their website (http://vandemataramfoundation.com) their earlier site (http://vandemataramfoundation.in) went offline due to financials. Now after all that had to rush to niloufer hospital where anther organisation i work with Sahayog Bharathi (http://sahayogbharathi.blogspot.com/) had a problem with their help desk (beaurocratic hassles in a Govt Hospital) so had to run there to talk to the Hospital superintendent.

And at the end of the day it was raining (man the weather was beautiful) and i was dying of hunger i was about to move out of the office and my mobile came alive, with a restricted number (meaning call from abroad) and some female voice says can I talk to veeraiah chowdhary, I was thinking who this was and then it struck me that two days ago mom told me that our neighbours in our village Kavita and boby their mom came and met her.It was a wild guess but sure in heart I said holding my cold nose and cough with a low voice Kavita and she was thrilled.

And then we talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked talked.... .. . . .. . . . .. . . . .. . . . for 2 hourse man thats what they call is nostalgia.

Happy and on a hangover went to sri's place and and logged into see her how she is after so long. Now she sent me an orkut invitation and saw her she is same old girl and as she was.

The beautiful bliss

I have always been wanting experiencing bliss in life. Never but for a few days that too after this sweet li'l devil came into my life did i experience the bliss. This cute li'l girl who lost her parrents and came to us at sewabharati showed wot life is to me atleast and the handful of volunteers at seva bharathi. She was smiling laughing and always playful (may b she doesnt even recollect me now). Her memories make life the most wonderful. I just couldnot help compile a video out of her pix that i clicked with my fav sony cybershot.

It was a nice normal day when the fulltime volunteer hari brought her from Adilabad dist, and it was from the second i opened my eyes at 6:oo am, that the blissful eyes started raining the best moments of my life. she was infront of me in a maroon coloured frock, smiling and mischevous and divine.

Truly Children are divine. The next 10 days 4th to 14th April 2001 are a blessing the smiles of the li'l girl still echo in my eyes and ears,

The monsoon in India has been late this year. Farmers and me are scarily looking at the skies for a drop of rain and atlast for the past 3 days it has been a relief. But the inflation has skyrocketed and scarily enough the prices have gone up up n up.

It is a sad and helpless state of affairs for the common man. While the Govt was expected to do SOMETHINg it presented a populist but vague budget with no sight of tangible results. The Indian budget with a million crore rupees (Rs10.21 trillion) expenditure is one of the biggest surpassing budgets of continents put together.

Subsidies up from Rs.71,431 crore in B.E. 2008-09 to Rs.1,11,276 crore in B.E. 2009-10.

In the budget, the Government yesterday provided massive outlay for social sector and rural development to the tune of over Rs 71,000 crore, including Rs 39,100 crore for its key employment scheme NREGA.

a new deficit figure of 6.8% of GDP, with a revenue deficit of 4.8%

Outlay for Defence up from Rs.1,05,600 crore in B.E. 2008-09 to Rs.1,41,703 crore in B.E. 2009-10.

Budget Estimates provide for a total expenditure of Rs.10,20,838 crore

India is planning to spend Rs 9 billion ($189 million) on education programs which will leverage IT and Communications network within the country to reach the poorest. The budget laid this out.

Although for India's size this is paltry. If I take India's population as 1.5 billion, then this amounts to Rs 6 per person. Which isn't a whole lot to begin within. But given the other expenses of Government schools and NGO funding over the year, one would assume that some of this will benefit the poorest of the kids.

Am a very impulsive fella ... Had decided to fly to hyderabad from Delhi after the trial i have gone through ...

Drove to the airport and bought a ticket on Kingfisher this after I tried hard in vain last night to reach hyderabad. Thats a story by itself. And probably has a story in itself. Saturday night I drove to the airport adn found all flights to hyd gone (8: 45 pm is d last one). after some dilly dalying and some more pure luck (which turned out to b a bad one) found that an Air india flight was scheduled at 12:15 am in the mid night from the international terminal. It was a hell of a ride and after overcomming the everlasting traffick jams of delhi / gurgaon reached the airport and its another hellava hunt to find an air india counter there after the mouse hunt i reach to a small 3X2 window with 2 small holes and glasss fixture and a huge crowd waiting out, was the counter i was looking for. My turn comes after 30 min . Nope dont jump to conclusions that the staff have been so out performing, out performing they were but in driving away people customers and driving them crazy.

After initial haa yeah wot ? so ....
I slowly convinced him that boss its business and can you book me a ticket to Hyderabad? He looks at me from top to bottom and says ok stand aside .. wait till i call you.
I waited from 9pm to 11:45 n then he says sorry bosss no tickets.
Was aghast and tried telling him (lied) that I was helpless and have an emergency and need to reach hyd by morning. Requested him of some help for which he said no bosss take a chill pill.. counter closed/. Then i pick up a fight with abuses at last and he says do wotever u want (go to hell) ....
I reach home and sleep get up in the morning and the rest I told you took a Kingfisher flight to hyd and the treatment was so good and pampering. I take an oath that i will never use a GOI run service unless otherwise.

Was trying to work on something productive while most of the time just browsing the net. My plans to travel to bangladesh and other south asian / countries in the sub continent has been postponed briefly.

Having endured a remarkable 2 hours in room ten at the UN today listening to Jon Voight, Alan Dershowitz and others explain how Hamas, Hezbollah and the Nazis are the same; Achmadinejad and Hitler are the same, and that we are now confronting a new Holocaust (I’ll need to write this out in pieces, it was that painful), I have been struggling to find the words for the pathology that has helped unleash this tsunami here at the Review Conference. Far from boycotting, the Israeli proxies have taken over.

Before, I called the pathological denial of Palestinian humanity, let alone Palestinian suffering, “moral schizophrenia”, to borrow the term from IF Stone. But after today’s display from Dershowitz, Wiesel, Sharansky and others, I’ve decided we need a stronger term for this sickness. My friend Susie used the term “Shoahism” meaning the holocaust as your religion. But there’s more.

The mere mention of Palestinian suffering sends these people into paroxysms of defensiveness and even rage. They go on and on about Holocaust denial, but this phenomenon is cut of the same cloth. It is virtually impossible for them to hold both the narrative of their own suffering, and the narrative of Palestinian suffering. It’s as if they did, they might break in two right there in front of us.

Jewish Peace News’ Judith Norman and Alistair Welch offer this:

Antony Lerman, former director of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research, addresses the question of why so many Jews, in Israel and around the world, seem blind to Palestinian suffering. The answer he gives – that many Jews see themselves as permanent victims – is not particularly new, but this article gives a particularly lucid account of this sense of victimhood and the effect it has in legitimating policies that lead to great suffering for Palestinians.

Not only do many Jews view themselves as victims, the nature of Jewish suffering is thought to be uniquely profound and intense. Jewish suffering is given a quasi- (or even downright) religious character; it transcends experience and is therefore irrefutable. Every anti-Semitic incident is regarded as far more sinister than it seems – it is a symptom of a smoldering global epidemic of Jew-hatred. Given this reasoning, it is impossible for Israel to over-react to any act of Palestinian hostility, because every Palestinian attack is a symptom of the same global existential threat that the Jews have (supposedly) faced for millennia.

Needless to say, this mindset has done enormous harm, not least to Israeli Jews, who are unable (even unwilling) to contextualize current events or sympathize with Palestinian suffering (Lerman cites empirical evidence for this), and are thus led to support a belligerent agenda that ultimately blocks any solution to the conflict.

The antidote Lerman offers is the very courageous and basic act of empathy: there is nothing unique about Jewish suffering, and it should be used as the key to understanding Palestinian suffering, not a justification for increasing it.

A tribe in Extinction: Chenchus

My heart goes out for the millions of pecies that were erased from the face of the earth and those that are on the verge of extinction.

Was Sitting in the balcony of my apartment and drooing the net. Had this mail from my friends from Seva Bharathi a Voluntary agency i worked with earlier and keep volunteering online. The mail had old facts and I had kind of a rewind of all that I lernt about the group of Tribals in the remote hamlets of Andhra pradesh in Southern India. This is about Chenchus one of the millions of species (including huamans) that are disappearing due to the rpid globalisation (BTW I am not against globalisation :)).

The group is designated Primitive Tribal Group by the Govt of India and it is a Tribe that will go in to extinction in say 50 or so years. Ironically nobody is interested that the group is only 47,000 (1991 census) in population and as of today is less than 37,000.

Wanted to do something about it. So sat down a couple of days ago and made this video .. May be some feedback or I dont know would help. To be fair I myself didnt like it but for some promotion for the NGO that I worked. Look at the Video on Youtube

And seriously except the CNN IBN's The week that wasn't and the Election that wasn't and the NDTV show Gustaki Maaf.

But as such the regional and hindi language shows are a little bit short of taking and clear potshots / criticism on the Political class. This sociological point of study can and is worth a point.
I believe the show gate is a result of this awakening.

Islamaphobia / just democratic exercise misunderstood?

Hav been pondering over news items that show islam taking over the world and today i saw the news in the BBC that a dozen polictical parties have been launched. I have muslim friends among others and have very good relationship with them. Never felt a discomfort amongst them, but my concern is with the Mullahs and maulvis taking over my country and ultimately the world to force us into doing what they feel is prescribed 1400 years ago.
: Is it a gud development I do not know, Is it bad I cant say ! But what I can say is my Sociology professor "Events are a stream and course correction, in terms of sociological change". But my psychological fear (looking at the enormous amount of bad news by Islamic fundamentalists) or Islamophobia if you want to call it that way is scaring me. Its good to have a diverse opinion and spectrum of ideas and ideologies but will that help ? Will that help change the way we live in the future of this planet.Is it going to be Netherlands / Germany with seperate sharia courts or is it going to be Islamic republics like Pakistan / Afghanistan (No offence to the common man on the streets)? Shall we go down in history as the ones that let it happen ? May be i am wrong but I have the right to panic ! dont I? Looking at the consequences ....

Thats one question that has been haunting me since yesterday morning..... Yesterday was election time for the constituecy that i live but i happen to work far away some 26 hrs by rail and 2 hrs by flight. So wot so ever be the justification reasons i might be having, i didnt vote.. I did not vote i missed i missed my chance to make a difference in whatsoever small way possible. May be I lost my chance to voice my rights coz I lost my chance to my duty. Elections in Democratic process have been a wonderful thing an oppurtunity to voice. I lost the chance. I am waiting for wot I shall do ? Only about 10% percent of urban youth voted in the last general election. and An estimated 100 million young voters will qualify to participate in this election. If ever there was an award for a best slur campaign it would obviously go to Testa setalvad.

Well the world has known the fact that there is this coking up / spicing up of the Gujarat Riots given the amount of publicity and media attention, But now the CBI and its unit SIT has given the evidence and puled off it officialy. Teesata Setalvad the high profile multi milion dolar / pound / euro and wot not has pulled it of realy wel now says the report submitted by the SIT to the Apex court. May be this is an election stunt ? But why would the ruling party want to do it and handover an issue in a plater to the opposition which has as of now noi real issues ? Wel you wait and watch I am as ignorant as anyone of us are.

NEW DELHI: The Special Investigation Team responsible for the arrests of those accused in Gujarat riots has severely censured NGOs and social activist Testa Setalvad who campaigned for the riot victims.
In a significant development, the SIT led by former CBI director R K Raghavan told the Supreme Court on Monday that the celebrated rights activist cooked up macabre tales of wanton killings.
Many incidents of killings and violence were cooked up, false charges were levelled against then police chief P C Pandey and false witnesses were tutored to give evidence about imaginary incidents, the SIT said in a report submitted before a Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam.
The SIT said it had been alleged in the Gulbarg Society case that Pandey, instead of taking measures to protect people facing the wrath of rioteers, was helping the mob. The truth was that he was helping with hospitalisation of riot victims and making arrangements for police bandobast, Gujarat counsel, senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi, said quoting from the SIT report.
Rohtagi also said that 22 witnesses, who had submitted identical affidavits before various courts relating to riot incidents, were questioned by the SIT which found that they had been tutored and handed over the affidavits by Setalvad and that they had not actually witnessed the riot incidents.
The SIT also found no truth in the following incidents widely publicised by the NGOs:
* A pregnant Muslim woman Kausar Banu was gangraped by a mob, who then gouged out the foetus with sharp weapons
* Dumping of dead bodies into a well by rioteers at Naroda Patiya
* Police botching up investigation into the killing of British nationals, who were on a visit to Gujarat and unfortunately got caught in the riots
Rohtagi said: "On a reading of the report, it is clear that horrendous allegations made by the NGOs were false. Stereotyped affidavits were supplied by a social activist and the allegations made in them were found untrue."
Obviously happy with the fresh findings of the SIT which was responsible for the recent arrests of former Gujarat minister Maya Kodanani and VHP leader Jaideep Patel, Rohtagi tried to spruce up the image of the Modi administration, which was castigated in the Best Bakery case by the apex court as "modern day Neros". He was swiftly told by the Bench that but for the SIT, many more accused, who are freshly added, would not have been brought to book.
The Bench said there was no room for allegations and counter-allegations at this late stage. "In riot cases, the more the delay, there is likelihood of falsity creeping in. So, there should be a designated court to fast track the trials. Riot cases should be given priority because feelings run high having a cascading effect," it said and asked for suggestions from the Gujarat government, Centre, NGOs and amicus curiae Harish Salve, who said the time had come for the apex court to lift the stay on trials into several post-Godhra riot cases.
While additional solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam agreed with the court that public prosecutors should be selected in consultation with Raghavan, counsel Indira Jaising said there should be a complete regime for protection of witnesses as the same government, which was accused of engineering the riots, was in power now.
Salve said that he would consult Raghavan and let the court know about a witness protection system for post-Godhra riot cases. The court asked the parties to submit their suggestions within a week.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar offers a counterpoint to Javed Akhtar’s finite views on spirituality

It is funny that in a country like India spirituality is talked about as a hoax. How can something which is so obvious, which is part of millions of people, be taken as a hoax? Spirituality is not a halo of the few, it is the breath of every human being. Have people forgotten that freedom was achieved through spirituality as the prime means by Mahatma Gandhi?

It has become a fashion with journalists to blindly continue the colonial tradition of calling Hindu spiritual leaders ahoax. They called Mahatma Gandhi, Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo godmen and hoaxes, and their contemporaries continue to do so. Would they say this to Mother Teresa or the Dalai Lama? No! Only Indian spiritual leaders are singled out.

The India Today Conclave offered a basis for a discussion on spirituality, “Halo or Hoax?” Javed Akhtar joked, “In movies we create an illusion and then after three hours we put up a sign, The End, and make people step back into reality, whereas spiritual people also create an illusion but they do not put an end to it.” The audience applauded. I smiled within and thought, yes, what this man says is correct, all that is created comes to an end. If something does not end then it is not created! Perhaps he didn’t even realise the profound truth of what he was saying.

So in some way he tacitly accepted that the love and drama he creates in the movies does end, but the love and transformation created by spiritual people never end. Yes, this whole world is an illusion that never ends. I drew Adi Shankara from his sarcasm. What an enigma: the perception and the reality. So Mr Akhtar is actually saying that his reel love songs are false. If only he knew the reality: that his lyrics express the genuine feelings of thousands of youth when they come and sing his marvelous songs before me, with that spark of love in their eyes. Real-life love never ends; it moves from life to lifetimes.

Spirituality is intoxicating. Only those who step into it will know. Before criticising we need to do our homework. Has one visited ashrams, like the Ramakrishna Ashram, Ananda Mayi Ma Mutt, Brahma Kumaris’, Gayatri Parivar, Pandurang Shastri, Sri Aurobindo Ashram or Art of Living? Has one spent time with saints? Only then does one’s views carry weight, else they remain simple accusations only, a distorted perception, not reality.

Mr Akhtar thundered again: “All modern-day spiritualists are hypocrites”. Many people froze as he dismissed the present-day gurus. Today there are millions of people who follow spirituality: are they all hypocrites? I appreciated that he could express his feelings boldly, without pretension. But the contempt that was exhibited for gurus was alarming. The hatred and frustration were obvious from his body language. It’s not just Mr Akhtar. Many journalists, communists, atheists and naxalites live in that state of mind, of being anti-religious, anti-rich, anti-famous, anti-business.

Should I argue and put him down? No! I have never put anyone down. I can’t deviate from my nature. So I simply said, everyone has the right to be ignorant.

A flash of Aurangzeb, who butchered thousands of gurus and would not listen to any reason or logic, came to mind. An intelligent man would look into all the avenues before he makes a comment or accusation. It is neces sary to stand up for justice and expose the misdeeds of the world. Instead the so-called activists only engage in accusations. Blaming the entire modern-day spiritual guru and sadhu community is as foolish as branding the entire Muslim community as terrorists.

It is the medieval brahmanical mindset to always put down business and politics and the colonial mindset to denounce gurus. As a result we never expanded our political influence nor globalised our business until very recently.

Then came his next statement that Buddha went from the palace to the forest and today the gurus come from the forest to the palace. I said to myself, ‘Come on! Buddha went to the forest when he was unhappy and miserable, and he came right back when he became a guru’. Any high school student knows this. Besides, every palace had a rajguru. Last year hundreds of sadhus were evicted from the caves and hermitages of the Himalayan region, near Haridwar, by the forest department. People generally think sadhus should live in forests with torn clothes but the forest department wanted to send them to the city!

The atheists have always fought with spiritual people. In those situations we should know how to act. It is pointless to argue with them. What do you say to a man who has never stepped into the realm of spirituality yet calls it a hoax? One cannot make a blind man see the light through his nose.

Unfortunately atheists are just fearful and good dramatists. A man who equates arms, drugs and spirituality is not going to change his opinion immediately and anyway his opinion is not going to matter for what is and what will be. Come on, I thought, sing a new song. My compassion grew.

Often activists seem to create rage and revenge in the victims; they cannot bring solace and creative action. In the name of justice they fume with hatred. This can lead to acts of violence like the recent killings of 19 sadhus in Uttar Pradesh. It has been an old tradition to glorify the dead, and call the living a hoax. Kabir had to put up with this as did Meera, Buddha, Jesus, Adi Shankara and many more... the wise do not mind the outburst of a few.

Spirituality is not a matter of the head, it is a matter of the heart. I had two choices: to argue and turn the conclave into a conflict or to keep silence. I chose the latter.

The Kamakhya temple celebrates Ambabachi mela every June. Here's a glimpse of it. have been tring to click some pix for a while as I have mentioned earlier. Here are a couple of self pix that i clicked myself. And ofcourse both of them in Bangalore.

The Great tidal disaster 2004 ::: Tsunami

The Sea Roared and hunted each one of the 7 lakh affected. The Tsunami is now a familiar name atleast in south India. We visited some 50 villages some affected and some unaffected by the TSUNAMI, one thing is common they all now know there is something demonic called Tsunami.
Early in the morning children were playing, it’s a very common scene in every village especially if there are a couple of Holidays. In Nagapattinam on Dec 26th too children were playing and at around 8: 40 am a group of children came running and shouting “The sea is coming it is flowing towards us”. With People celebrating Christmas on Saturday and a Sunday, who in the world can expect the worst things to happen, a natural calamity, a calamity that can kill a hundred thousand and a half, and a 7 million more people homeless, displaced. They lost everything Sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, mothers, fathers their boats, nets, houses, cash, savings and everything.

The Worst affected in India is the Nagapattinam and cudddalore belt. I visited the place starting from Cuddalore to Naggapattinam and down south also. People are shocked couldn’t believe such a thing could happen to them. Not even the best of the Hollywood can imagine a calamity of this scale and intensity. Mothers who have lost their sons and daughters, fathers who could not see their beloved children for the last time, hard earned money, belongings everything gone in a flick of a second.

The Poombuhar village is one of the hard hit of the 400 affected villages. Amidst the debris that is left behind by the devastation is the mighty building of the ages. It used to be a famous port city for the Cholas who ruled literally all the Tsunami affected areas from South India to the Island of Srilanka, to Indonesia and Maldives. A mother was tired of crying she was repeating for a hundredth time how she held her son and daughter to her bosom but the mighty sea snatched them away and she could not help but struggle for own life. She has been struggling to come out of the trauma. She thanks the Goddess for saving her children from the sea tide. But, the Shock is unbearable and the scars will stay.

There are a hundred and thousand stories like this. This village has a count that’s how the Volunteers call them, of 480. The volunteer Balaji from the Dhan Foundation says "Its the worst one can imagine. After seeing this I felt for a while the dead are lucky and the living are dying" He along with a team of 58 volunteers have come to assess the extent of damage. The woman still was weeping and no amount of consoling can bring her back to normalcy. A couple of meters away is a pukka house, a family is standing looking at us. We approached them only to hear some protesting. They, the villagers say were a well to do family and the family has now gone in to depression. They can neither ask for help nor have anything to eat. Every face has a story, every heart is weeping.

In villages near Cuddalore it is no different, Volunteers are pouring in, relief material is flowing twice the volume required but no amount of physical help can bring any succor to these souls. The scars of the Tsunami, loans and debts are all they are left with.

It took 3 days to reach the affected people for the voluntary organizations. The first to reach were the youth from the neighboring villages. They couldn’t understand what to do. But still the voluntary organisations have done a commendable work. They have not only given their best individually but have networked and helped each other in coping up with the trying times. Organisations like the RSS, Bhrat Sewasharama sangha, Mata Amritanandamayi math, Ramakrishna mission, The Art of living Foundation, UNICEF, HOPE India and scores of them have been working day in and day out. Not only Indian but also Volunteers from abroad have landed here to work for the affected. The NGO Co-ordination centre at Nagapattinam recorded 350 such agencies as on 6th Jan’05.

The district collector and the officers are appealing to all the organistations not to give food and clothing that is not compatible to the local people. Some organisations have brought breads, pizzas and north Indian food as well as Jeans and western outfits for distribution. The corporate India has also risen to the rescue of the Tsunami victims. Bisleri has volunteered loads of Drinking water, while aquaguard and Aquafin also followed. Drinking water being the most wanted commodity and less available this gesture has won laurels.

The Naggapattinam port is literally in shambles ships, boats, trawlers all of them huge ones have been thrown out of the sea. An estimated 250 big fishing boats have been thrown by the Tidal wave a distance of 200 to 300 meters. The tide has touched the people standing on the third floor of a building. Shiva kumar from Hyderabad who has been working with Sevabharathi Tamilnadu in distributing the relief says, “The people are in shock. But still they are making efforts to come to normalcy. Most of the fisherman in this locality are well off, some of them have earned so much that they have settled in the Arab countries. They run their fishing vessels which cost 15 to 20 lakh from there itself.”

UNICEF’s Gesture in association with Syntax tanks has also been praised. UNICEF has arranged 3-4 Syntax tanks in each and every lane of the Tsunami affected Nagapattinam. But the villages that lie far away are of nobody’s concern. The villages some 40 km away from the Nagapattinam have not even once visited by the voluntary agencies or the Govt officials. It is only the RSS volunteers that have actually visited the place and taken up some relief and rescue operations.

The Volunteers are having a tough time, as the crowd is uncontrollable. The used clothes that have come in loads are being abandoned, as there are no takers. Also the Fisher folk, says Nagesh a volunteer working with RAM from Hyderabad, have fish as their daily dish as the sambar for other Tamil areas. Now they have been rejecting the food that we give.” The Army, Navy, Coast guard and Air force are stretching themselves, working overtime to clear off the debris. The Media has a new fantasy they should do their duty but not be an obstacle to us says the RPF jawans working with the clearing of the boats and collapsed houses in the Port area. There has been the presence of one media personnel or the other from the day one in the port area. But have they reported the devastation in the interior villages all of them are here, says Laxmanan a visitor. Onlookers, people affected, volunteers, Armed forces personnel in relief operations, Media personnel all make the complete picture at the Relief sites but we should be careful not to affect the relief work to be hampered.

All over, the mighty Himalayas, the wonderful Alps, the Sunderbans, the Sahara, the great wall of China, the Bermuda triangle and the Malaysia "truly Asia" and what not...

But my moment of travel opps came only after 1999 when I started getting involved with a Voluntary Organisation Seva Bharati Andhra Pradesh (1999-tilldate). This I should say is the best part of my life. A point of time when I was travelling through the Western Part of Andhra Pradesh, the most poorest and driest, as well as less reached areas. The tribals, the forests, their living conditions, the Govt machinery and whole lot of things. And thats when I fell in love for Clicking the Pictures, showcase the reality that was, away from the projected Hi-Tech and developed state. This is where the Tribal culture and rich colours were unvieled before me, the villages, the dignity of labour and all such things that I later started appreciating were introduced to me at this point of time.

Travelougue:::
The best part of all my travel is is my camera and hoards of Pix that I clicked. As the Information officer at Sevabharathi, I needed to chronicle my trips, my observations and the reports. what best way other than visual documentation and thats what prompted me to Photography.

But Sevabharathi was unlike other NGOs who spent on publicity and hi - fi things. Luckily we had a donor who realised the importance of the Photographs in our work. He gifted us a Sony CyberShot:S30, my best companion apart from my Short wave Radio. I have clicked nearly 4,000 pix or so (Some of them can be seen on the Seva bharathi site). The topics of my photographs varied from Service activities to Training, Health, Education, Poverty, Drought, Child Labour, Orphans, Physically and Mentally Handicapped, Globalisation etc. It is infact a wonderful experience.

And now I carry a Genius G312 G-Shot Digital Camera) Then the later part of career took a turn when I was offered a Scholarship for Journalism Course. This is when I started travelling out of the State, and travelled almost the whole of the south, and to J& K, covered Tsunami aftermath, the piligrimage centres like Udupi, Dharmastala, the cities like mangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, hyderabad etc, then forests of Chikmangalur, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Forest reserves like Bannergatta, bandipur.

NOSTALGIA Doesn't the past look beautiful, one reason might be, that its gone and over. But The Best is Yet to Come.

Thats how I cherish each and every part of life. Thats why Nostalgia has a special place in my life. To that matter anybody's life. Childhood: Its the most precious part of anybody's persona, infact pschologists say it moulds the persons life character & attitude.

My childhood has been in a small village, Inkollu, Prakasham Dist of Andhra Pradesh, India. The village, no it was more of a town than a village. It was the commercial hub of the surrounding villages and Mandal / block headquarters. Its a dry village / should i say Town, in the sense that there was routine things not much of a change. It had all the wonderful things a village had, green farms, traditional celebrations and practices, affectionate citizens, wonderful as well as colourful fairs. I stayed here until my 10th standard, ofcourse my school Prakasham Public School. The first English medium CBSE School of the mandal / block. Its wonderful to reminisce the way villagers treated us. Since we were the only people dressed like westerners with tie, shoes and belt shirts tucked in we had a special treatment. we were often lifted to the school by a bullock cart / bicycle or any passerby with a vehicle.

Those wonderful years of my 10th Class Board Exams, my 10+1 and 10+2 / Intermediate in Ongole the district headquarters, my graduation at Sadineni Chowdaraiah College of Arts and Science at Maddirala, Guntur Dist, my Post graduation MBA, in Hyderabad, my Work at Seva Bharathi, there after my wonderful 1 year at bangalore at sscms, each moment is so wonderful that I cant forget.

About Hi, I am veeru (veeraiah chowdary).... ofcourse from India. Rural India, a place, located on the eastern coast of a southern state, Confusing ! ok let me make it simple. Its Andhra pradesh, if you can recollect of the Hi fi CEO like Chief minister Mr Naidu belongs to. The village Inkollu is some 14 Km to east coast Bay of Bengal.

Have a diverse list of hobbies and tastes from radio Dxing to travelling to Volunteering to browsing and reading. And Nostalgia is the one word that can tie me up. Love the mountains, forests and oceans and what not, anything and everything under the sky and beyond.

I have the most hopping career be it education or job profile. My Edu, Jobs and pojects handled etc are all so diverse and in a way, ways apart. I have a Bachelors in Computers, then to Business administration to Journalism. If thats not convincing look at my Jobs, first worked for Seva Bharathi as a fulltime volunteer managing their information systems and building up their Information database, later jumped to another volunteering job with an ILO funded organisation called Seeds men association from there moved ahead to managing an online news mag cnvi and from there now into Journalism.
